Failure to Thrive

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

Christopher Lee in the Monday, 28 May 2007 WASHINGTON POST sounds a jarring wake-up call to the impending tragedy of reduced federal funding of the National Institutes of Health.

If Americans already know about these cutbacks facing researchers in cancer, Alzheimer’s, heart disease and mental health and other diseases, we certainly don’t comprehend the looming disaster in human and economic costs. If we did, we’d express some outrage.

I love Mr. Lee’s quote from Rep. David R. Obey (D-Wis.), chairman of the House Appropriations Committee: “Healthy people are a whole lot more productive than sick ones.”

My guess is that healthy people account for more votes, too. We shall see.

Asking a Favor

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

Diabetes is approaching epidemic proportions in the U.S., and I would appreciate your help in doing something about it.

I have formed a team and am riding my road bike in the Tour de Cure, an important fund-raising event of the American Diabetes Association. I could really use your help - please either 1) join or 2) support our team.

DATE - Sunday, June 10, 2007
LOCATION - Reston, VA, Town Center

The Tour is a ride, not a race, with routes designed for everyone from the occasional rider to the experienced cyclist. Thousands of individual riders and teams have participated to support the Association's mission: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

For the fourth consecutive year, we are organizing a team called "Spokes-Persons." How clever is that?

We can make a difference in the lives of the nearly 21 million Americans suffering from this deadly disease. Rain or shine, it will be a beautiful day.

Please click the link below to register for the Tour de Cure and join or support our team.

Thanks,
John Seng, Founder and President

Fateful New Definition of Cutting Edge Research

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

I recently joined a group of pancreatic cancer research advocates organized by PanCAN (www.pancan.org) to lobby for increased funding for NIH, not cutbacks as are happening right now. As you read this, researchers are being told to shave the number of patients being studied to save on expenses.

When will elected officials consider the renewal and increase of federal investment in cancer clinical trials as sacrosanct as further limits on gun control.

If most cancer survivors and their families and friends knew that Uncle Sam has taken a paring knife to cancer clinical trials, it’s hard to imagine the outrage. Pass it along, and send a message to your Members of Congress (Representatives, Senators) while you’re at it!
