Internet Week NYC Part I: Social Media for Non-Profits

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Last week was Internet Week New York, an eight day splendor of panels, tweets, live videos and happy hours. The event was presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (which organizes the Webby Awards) and was, in a way, a place to celebrate the “nerdy togetherness” as Rachel Sklar remarked, that comes from the Internet.roundtable-nyc2

Anthony Phung, a Spectrum staffer who helps hold down our New York office, joined me for a few events. Below is my perspective from one of the panels we attended. Stay tuned for another post from Anthony on the future of the web for students.

Social Media for Non-Profits

This event featured Soraya Darabi (@sorayad), who manages the New York Times multimedia and social media marketing. She was joined by Rachel Sklar, Matthew Knell and Allison Palmer.

There was a ton of knowledge shared, so after the fact I sifted through my notes and pulled out a few salient points for non-profits just now entering the realm.

The Future of the Web: Think Verizon Commercial

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Lately, I’ve been thinking about the future of the Web. Without fail, I end up conjuring up an image somewhat reminiscent of a Verizon commercial – thousands of people within my network following me around everywhere, except instead of standing idly by, they’re telling me what they think, giving me suggestions, advice, etc.

Sounds annoying in real life, right? Well, online, the data of one’s social network (i.e., the online identities of users and their friends) can go a long way, especially when it’s portable.  According to Jeremiah Owyang of Forrester Research, that’s exactly where we’re headed. In his new report, “The Future Of The Social Web: Portable IDs Catalyze A Power Shift To Consumers,” Jeremiah speaks to the future of the social Web within five eras (check out his related blog post):

Five Eras of The Social Web

Currently, we’re straying into the era of Social Colonization where your friends, in a way, follow you wherever you go online. To conceptualize this, think of seamlessly taking your friends from Facebook over to Plaxo and vice versa – something that emerging technologies are beginning to enable. As Jeremiah aptly notes, this transference of one’s network has its benefits for both users and companies, but also can be very frightening for the latter whose products can be rated and ranked by a community without their knowledge or consent.

It’s Never Too Late, Not Even 38

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Sometimes, there’s no better way to start the day than with some good, old-fashioned publicity. That happened early this morning when Spectrum VP Amanda Sellers dropped by to ask me if I’d seen today’s WASHINGTON POST article mentioning the National Capital Tour de Cure that our firm is sponsoring. I had not, and still haven’t seen the print version, but reading the article online completely made my day! (I’m chairing the ride.)

Read the story of 38-year-old American Diabetes Association employee Sara Sklaroff, who committed herself to the fundraising ride for diabetes before she even learned to ride a bike!

Hopefully by Sunday, June 14, Sara’s courage and passion will have infected thousands of other Washington-area people with diabetes and their friends and family enough to register and ride in Tour de Cure.

If diabetes got the respect, attention and funding support that cancer does, maybe we’d all be closer to finding a cure. Please join or support Spectrum’s “Spokes Persons” Tour de Cure team.
