Therapy Dogs Bring Joy to Children with Special Needs

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

GILDA RADNER ONCE SAID, “I THINK DOGS ARE THE MOST AMAZING CREATURES; THEY GIVE UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. FOR ME, THEY ARE THE ROLE MODEL FOR BEING ALIVE.” THIS STATEMENT RINGS TRUE IN THE CASE OF BALTIMORE RESIDENT STEPHANIE COOPER-GREENBERG, WHO KNEW THAT HER FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS WOULD MATURE TO BE MORE THAN TYPICAL HOUSEHOLD PETS.

Two years ago Stephanie decided that her two Dalmatians were not going to lie around on the sofa all day. Therapy Dogs Bring Joy to Children with Special NeedsWhile most dogs provide unconditional love to their owners, Stephanie wanted her dogs to be different — she realized that the love her dogs provide could make a difference in the lives of so many others, especially children with special needs. Week-Long Immunization Campaign Reaches Millions

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

FACT: An estimated 10 million cases and 164,000 deaths from measles occur each year.

FACT: Measles is a leading cause of vaccine-preventable deaths among young children.

FACT: For every 1,000 children who get measles, one or two will die.

When I came across these chilling statics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), I was surprised by the incidence rate and the severity of a disease that we in the U.S. rarely see. In developing countries, measles is a killer, so I was interested to learn about a program underway in Zimbabwe.

Last week, Dr. Henry Madzorera, Zimbabwe’s Honorable Minister of Health and Child Welfare, launched a week-long nationwide measles immunization campaign. The “Child Health Days” campaign targeted approximately 5 million children aged 6 months to 14 years with the measles vaccination, as well as vitamin A supplementation and all the other recommended antigens for children less than five years of age. This mass immunization campaign came in response to the current measles outbreak that has affected 55 out of 62 districts in Zimbabwe, killing approximately 384 children. (more…)

The National Farm to Cafeteria Conference

Friday, May 21st, 2010

“There are good things happening in this city,” said Detroit Mayor David Bing on the third morning of the National Farm to Cafeteria Conference held in Detroit, a city quickly becoming a leader in the urban and school garden movement.

Yet, that same statement could have come from countless other mayors, school administrators and community leaders in cities and states across the country. The farm to school movement is blossoming nationwide, and the nearly 700 attendees at the National Farm to Cafeteria Conference know it.nfcc-logo

Hosted by the Farm to School Network and organized by the Community Food Security Coalition, the conference was supported by a wide range of corporations, foundations, agencies and non-profits. With the majority of school lunches failing to provide the most basic nutritional needs to children, there has never been a better opportunity than now to change young American’s relationship with food.

Conference participants were reminded of the impact one school garden can have for a child who has never seen a head of broccoli or a seed grow into a plant. Farm to school programs reconnect communities, support local economies and improve the health of our children. Bottom line: a healthy and locally-sourced school lunch can benefit a student’s ability to learn as much as it benefits a local farmer’s pocketbook.

Will BPA Bump Food Safety to Back Burner?

Friday, May 7th, 2010

With another food contamination outbreak in the headlines – this time E. coli-tainted romaine lettuce traced to an Ohio food company that has sickened at least 19 people- the question of how and when food safety legislation will move forward is more timely than ever. While the House passed its version of The Food Safety Enhancement Act last July, the Senate has been much slower to act. food-nutrition

#140Conf

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Last week we attended the 140 Characters Conference NYC – referred to in the Twitter world, as #140conf.  The conference that many online pegged as a ‘must attend’ for twitteratti and tech geeks alike was centered around the premise of exploring the “state of NOW” and looking at the effect that real-time communications have on individuals, industry and the world at large.

Over 100 speakers took part in the two day conference and weighed in on the real-time web and how social media is making an impact across the board; including tech entrepreneur Jeff Pulver (the founder of the conference140conf) advertising legend Donny Deutsch, and head of corporate communications for Johnson & Johnson, Marc Monseau.  Each speaker contributed thoughts, ideas and questions on the obstacles and immense advantages that come along with being actively engaged on Twitter and across social media.  The NYC conference drew more than 1,200 people, with an online audience for the live webcast of more than 77,000 individuals globally. Above are just a few thoughts contributed by the speakers who laughed at, praised, bashed and dissected the ways to use technology in communicating in today’s world.

National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

This May marks the 50th anniversary of The Pill: a medical breakthrough that symbolized the importance of women’s health and independence during a time of social and political unrest in America.  Considered one of the most important inventions of the 20th century, it should be celebrated and simultaneously contextualized with today’s issues. Therefore, as media outlets, pundits and historians discuss the importance of the birth control pill, there is another topic this May that deserves equal attention in this contraception discussion: The National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. womens_health
