Eat, Drink and Live Longer!

Friday, September 9th, 2011
I may be one year older today and on the verge of decline (and a early mid-life crisis), but thanks to a recently resurfaced study, I am approaching my birthday with a little more pep in my step.

The Harvard School of Public Health study followed nearly 14,000 mostly white women beginning in 1976 and found that those who averaged roughly one to two  alcoholic drinks a day in their late 50s were up to 28% more likely to survive to age 70 in good health compared to nondrinkers. The researchers defined “successful surviving” as living to at least 70 and being free of cancer, heart conditions and other chronic diseases and suffering no significant mental or physical impairment.

BDI’s Social Communications & Healthcare 2011: Empowering employees to ‘play’ with social media

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

Last Wednesday, I had the pleasure of attending the Business Development Institute’s Social Communications & Healthcare conference in New York City. It was the third year that BDI has put on the conference but one of the first times the event has included such robust case studies from industry leaders.

It is unfortunate that in pharma, we really don’t have many social media case studies to look at, yet. And this isn’t just because social media is new, because really, it’s not that new anymore (and what’s new today is old tomorrow). The problem lies more in the fact that so many companies and agencies are doing innovative stuff that they aren’t yet allowed to disclose. Here at Spectrum, a number of our progressive social media-related initiatives are highly sensitive and stay confidential. However, in the meantime, it’s inspiring to see all the ways people are finding to best socially communicate.

(Pixels & Pills covered the event and they provide a ton of great video interviews that you should check out. And New Millenium Research & Consulting has photos up on their Facebook.)

The U.S. Global Health Initiative: Issues and Perspectives Panel

The U.S. Global Health Initiative: Issues and Perspectives Panel

One year ago this May, President Obama announced the formation of the Global Health Initiative (GHI), a $63 billion project spanning six years dedicated to developing a comprehensive U. S global health strategy. With a focus on combating HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), malaria and other global health issues, the GHI brings together multiple government agencies to strengthen health systems and fight diseases around the world.

Earlier this week I attended a panel discussion and forum organized by The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation in which three senior-level government officials involved in the GHI addressed key issues ranging from implementation challenges to promoting country ownership of GHI initiatives, to budget allocations, to the GHI’s increased focus on women’s health issues.

As the panel spoke and answered audience questions, one theme caught my attention again and again: the need for the GHI to better measure and capitalize on their successes, apply them to existing and expanded platforms and push for results. (more…)

Living Proof Event

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Some good news to share – Bill and Melinda Gates swept into town last night to say thank you – to the U.S. taxpayer. At a talk last night in D.C. they spoke about the success of their Living Proof Project, a series of global health initiatives that are demonstrating measurable results by saving millions of lives. The Gates stressed the importance of U.S. funding of global health projects and actively sought to illustrate the results of the investments made and to illuminate the importance of public/private partnerships. To name just a few of the advances made:  (more…)

Annual Meeting, Global Perspective

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

April 2nd – 3rd, GLOBALHealth PR agency heads, including Spectrum’s CEO and Chair of GLOBALHealthPR John Seng, met for the annual face-to-face planning meeting.  Here is John’s take on the trip.ghpr

I visited Italy with my colleague Rosalba Cano for the 8th Annual General Meeting of our GLOBALHealthPR partners, and hardly two days after the meeting ended in Venice, the earthquake struck the town of L’Aquila, which is much closer to Rome. (Martin Slater, the president of our Italy partner firm Noesis, suggested the Italian Red Cross among reliable relief organizations for readers interested in supporting assistance efforts.)

From Japan to the US to Latin America and throughout Europe, our partners connected to discuss our individual company performances for 2008, our prospects for 2009 and beyond, and to take a closer look at the different pharmaceutical approval and marketing regulatory environments for each of the 10 markets covered by GLOBALHealthPR worldwide.

For readers who don’t know, GLOBALHealthPR is the largest health-focused network of independent public relations firms that collaborate on an international basis. Spectrum Washington is the network’s headquarters. (more…)
