What does Google’s Fine Mean for Your PPC?

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Today or tomorrow the Department of Justice is expected to announce Google will have to pay half a billion dollars in fines for ads run on its network that sold illegal drugs.  For the better part of a year, Google had been battling with online  ’pharmacies’ about the products they sell.

Google had stated in official documents, due to the difficult nature of regulating ads on their network they shouldn’t be held accountable for ads they were actively removing.  Google’s official statement, “… it’s obvious with hindsight that we shouldn’t have allowed these ads on Google in the first place. Given the extensive coverage this settlement has already received, we won’t be commenting further,” is clear and concise. They messed up and they know it.

Google Plus

I have been lucky enough to have been given access to Google+ for a couple of weeks now.  I must admit, I really like the potential for what Google has built here. Unlike other social networks that try to create broad connections with myself and people I hardly know, Google+ really focuses on strengthening the relationships I already have.

As I sit here at my desk, with Basecamp open in one web browser and Google+ in the other, I am really coming to terms with what my Google+ account will be for. I am not going to ‘like’ someone’s post (sure I can +1 it, but I probably won’t) or tag someone in a photo. Again, I could do that but I probably won’t.  What I am going to do is send out targeted messages to targeted people.

Social Search for Health Care

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

One person’s tooth discomfort is another person’s dentist recommendation. While that might not be exactly how the saying goes, Google’s newly launched Social Search allows just that. If one of my friends tweets about a dreaded upcoming trip to the dentist, I’m actually quite interested because I’m looking for a dentist in the area. As someone in the market for a new D.D.S., I can run a Social Search on the term and see who in any of my social networks has mentioned “dentist.” I can then reach out to this person to get their opinion/review of their dentist. dentist

The primary goal of Social Search is to ‘find more relevant public content’ from within the social circles we engage in. Social Search runs alongside Google’s search platform, so users see traditional results, as well as more personalized, applicable results from their network. Social Search pulls from social platforms such as Flickr, MySpace, and LinkedIn, as well as contacts from Gmail, and other Web sites linked to a user’s Google Profile. (For Social Search to work, you must have a Google Profile.) (more…)

1.  New Nielsen Report Finds Social Networking Sites Tripled in Popularity this Year:

Everybody and their mother is on Facebook …literally… and now there’s proof.  The Nielsen Company released data yesterday that supports what we already know: the popularity of social networking sites is growing exponentially.  Accordingfacebook2 to a summary of the report posted on NielsenWire, “Americans have nearly tripled the amount of time they spend at social networking and blog sites such as Facebook and MySpace from a year ago.”  Not only does this mean some of us may need to change our privacy settings to prevent embarrassing  wall posts from Mom, but the findings are also significant for online advertising trends.  NielsenWire reports, “Estimated online advertising spending on the top social network and blogging sites increased 119 percent, from approximately $49 million in August 2008 to approximately $108 million in August 2009 – all despite a recession.” One more reason to pay attention to social media.
