Demystifying a Breast Cancer Diagnosis
A diagnosis of
breast cancer can be overwhelming - the sheer amount of
information that patients and families must research and digest
can be daunting. Many people say they don't even know
where to start. What comes as a surprise to many is that there
are many types of breast cancer. Knowing what type you have and
what this means is really the starting point from which educated
treatment decisions can be made. Working with Genomic Health
and Breast Cancer Network of Strength, Spectrum gave women with
breast cancer a starting point - making the information
gathering process a little easier.
We
developed an online, interactive tool called My
Breast Cancer Coach to help women hone in on
information relevant to their type of breast cancer. "Coach"
uses a nurse-guided questionnaire to collect information about the
woman's tumor type to develop a semi-customized report that provides
detailed disease and treatment information specific to her type
of breast cancer. This report defines the type of breast
cancer, outlines specific tests to consider, provides details on the
full range of potential treatment options and gives suggestions on
diet and exercise.
"Coach" has helped
thousands of women gain a greater understanding of their breast
cancer and the response from the health care provider community has
been overwhelmingly positive with many practices incorporating it
into their patient resources.
