The Institute of Medicine of the National Academies (IoM)
The Institute of Medicine of the National Academies (IoM) is the nation's preeminent adviser to business leaders and policymakers on health and science policy issues. As a non-political, independent scientific adviser, the IoM provides advice and guidance that is unbiased and evidence-based. Spectrum has helped IoM communicate its research studies. One example is the report, Food Marketing to Children and Youth: Threat or Opportunity? In working with the IoM, Spectrum publicized the report's key findings and recommendations, demonstrating IoM's presence as a significant, defining voice in the child obesity and child health arena. A corollary goal was leverage media coverage to increase dialogue among legislators, policy makers, influential individuals and organizations.
Spectrum's efforts led to widespread national media coverage of the report, reaching an estimated audience of more than 121 million people. Top outlets featuring stories included USA Today, U.S. News & World Report, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, CBS Early Morning Show, NBC Nightly News and ABC World News This Morning. The report markedly raised the debate among the role of food marketing and its place in the child obesity epidemic.
