Making Microbes Cool for Kids
Spectrum
combined two Web sites into one new one - microbeworld.org - that
would appeal to 5-12 grade students and educators for The American
Society of Microbiology (ASM). The goal of the site was to make
microbiology appealing to students who may not normally be
interested, and to create a popular educational resource for students
and teachers.
The new site features interviews with
microbiologists, the Microbiology Radio podcasts, microbiology news
and information on microbes. Fun features for students include
customizable e-vites and downloadable screensavers. Resources
for educators and parents include a photo gallery and science
experiments.
After the redesign, there was a dramatic increase
of traffic, with the number of new visitors doubling and the time
visitors spent at the site tripling. Microbeworld.org received
the gold award in the Association TRENDS All Media Contest for best
design, interactivity and overall effectiveness in the competitions'
Web site category.
