Fellows in Focus: Kickstarting an Agency Career

By Spectrum Science | Mar 19 2025

At Spectrum Science, we are dedicated to growing and mentoring the marketing and communication leaders of tomorrow. Our Fellowship Program is a launch pad for careers in healthcare marketing, communications, and media that provides participants with exposure to top leadership, on the job training, and a foundational skillset for their future.

Fellows are full-time employees who are integrated into teams across our business where they gain hands-on experience. They also receive trainings on various capabilities and soft skills from top subject matter experts in our organization and complete a group capstone project at the end of the program.  Upon completion of the program, utilizing their newly acquired skills to continue their career growth at Spectrum.

This week we talked to Maggie Brenan, Account Supervisor in Client Services and Class of 2021 Fellow, about how the Fellowship helped kickstart her career in the healthcare communications industry. Hear more from Maggie below.

  1. How would you describe the Fellowship program to someone who knows little about it?

The Fellowship program is a wonderful introduction to an agency career – as opposed to a traditional agency internship, Spectrum’s program ensures that the Fellows get the opportunity to learn from senior leaders from all corners of the organization about day-to-day agency life and the ways in which we’re able to provide the best possible strategic support to our clients.

  1. What skills did you gain in your Fellowship and how do you apply them in your current role?

Unlike many other post-graduate programs, I was able to begin honing my strategic thinking in the Fellowship program that I use in my client work on a daily basis. Since Fellows are embedded on client teams starting on day one at Spectrum, I learned time management and prioritization very quickly which is crucial to exceling in agency life! Additionally, the leadership opportunities I received while working on my capstone project during my Fellowship and in supporting other Fellows classes throughout the years helped me hone the skills I use as a people manager, including for this year’s Fellows class, almost 4 years later.

  1. What are some qualities that will help Fellows be successful at Spectrum?

The best possible Fellow is driven, organized, and a confident problem solver. It’s also important to be a good team player!

  1. Any advice for people interested in applying to the Fellowship?

Lead with your interest for the work we do at Spectrum – we work alongside companies that are doing really important work for patients around the world. It’s really a privilege and something to get excited about!
