At Spectrum, we recognize the profound significance of sabbaticals as moments for relaxation and rejuvenation. We proudly offer our dedicated team members who have been with us for more than seven years, the opportunity to take a month-long break. Today, we shine a spotlight on Brett Care, who used his time off to prioritize moments of connection with his family and friends, fully embracing his detachment from work.
Brett, vice president of measurement and analytics, reflects on his sabbatical and its impact on his outlook on his work.
1. How did you spend your sabbatical?
It was a combination of rest and relaxation and travel. I visited family and friends in Northern California and got to spend my birthday at Disneyland! I also had the incredible opportunity to visit Skywalker Ranch – home to some of Lucasfilm’s production studios. There was also plenty housework, reading and sleeping in.
2. What were you looking forward to most with your time off?
Aside from the fun plans with family and friends, I was looking forward for a chance to reset and put more energy into non-work priorities that had been pushed to the back burner, including reading and house projects.
3. How did you view your sabbatical time differently than your FTO?
I knew it would go by fast, so I committed to journaling every day to be more intentional about how I was spending the time. I saw it as an opportunity to evaluate my daily routine outside of work.
4. After your sabbatical, did you have a renewed outlook on your work?
I did! When I came back, I felt refreshed and felt like I was able to break out of my normal routine to consider more thoughtful or strategic ways of doing things. I also had a renewed interest in some long-term pet projects that had been pushed to the side.
5. What’s one piece of advice you’d give someone about to go on a sabbatical?
Be intentional. A month goes by so quickly, I found it to be incredibly helpful to journal daily to help me stay present.
6. Did you learn anything new while on your sabbatical?
While not new, I did rediscover my love for reading, which has continued well past the end of my sabbatical.
